It’s a project that has been in the pipeline since 2013. It now looks like the much-anticipated international airport at Mamamah will begin construction before the end of 2017.
New airport to bring prosperity and employment
Mamamah International Airport is the latest of many strategic Chinese investments made in Sierra Leone’s economy. It represents a long-held dream of President Koroma coming to fruition. Once complete, the airport will put Sierra Leone on the map as the West African hub of international trade and transport, encouraging immense economic growth. In addition, during the 36-month construction phase, opportunities for employment and industrial growth in many sectors abound.
Mamamah, the site chosen for the new airport, involves relocating the existing airport inland from Freetown, to a location that is more accessible to the surrounding areas. Engineers from project contractors, China Railway International, are already on site preparing for a works yard, while equipment can be expected to arrive in Sierra Leone by September 2017. The estimated completion date of the airport is late 2020.
Become more employable with technician training in Sierra Leone
Technicians working in the construction industry should be thinking of improving their skills to take advantage of job opportunities presented by the new airport construction. Technician training offered by Technicians for Africa provides an excellent program of courses from Caterpillar University, to give both existing and up-and-coming technicians the edge when it comes to finding employment.
Free online courses for technicians
Sponsored by Caterpillar University, our free technician training courses provide learners with a complete overview and grounding of all Cat® equipment commonly used in the construction industry: assembly, correct use and handling, and an introduction to the basics of electricity, hydraulics, and other concepts. The online training program is intense: it comprises 18 modules to be completed over 3 to 6 months. After concluding the program, learners receive a certificate of completion that acknowledges them as Foundation Level 1 and Level 2 certified technicians.
